Baseball Splits First 2 of 3 Game Series vs. Finger Lakes in Region III Tournament
The SUNY Adirondack Baseball team split the first two games of a three game series with Finger Lakes Community College in the first round of the Region III Baseball Tournament this afternoon in Canandaigua, NY.
In the first game of the double header, the Timberwolves earned a 3-2 victory behind a strong performace from starting pitcher Max Perotta. Perotta pitched 7 and 1/3 innings allowing only two runs off four hits while recording a season high eleven strikeouts.
Finger Lakes got on the board first in this game, scoring one run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Timberwolves responded immediatly and scored their only three runs of the game all in the fourth inning. Joe Battista got things started with a one out single. A walk would put him on second before Josh Myers steped up with a double to score the first run of the game for SUNY Adirondack. Gil Acosta picked an RBI on a ground out that advacned the runners to take a 2-1 lead before Jared Winkle came through with a two out single that scored another run.
Vinny Valenti stepped into a 3-2 game with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning and after walking the first batter, he put away the next five batters to end the game for SUNY Adirondack.
The second game was tied 1-1 after nine innings. The Timberwolves took a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth after a wild pitch allowed Eric Corhouse to cross the plate. However in the bottom of the inning, a double with runners on first and second would score two for Finger Lakes and end the game 3-2. It was a tough game for the Timberwolves offense, only coming up with four hits. Joe Battista led the team with two hits in five at bats. Zach Malek was on the mound for the Timberwolves in this one and pitched well in the loss. Malek allowed three runs off seven hits with four strikeouts.
This series will conclude tomorrow afternoon with the winner of the game moving to play in a four team tournament next week for the Region III Championship. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY.
