Timberwolves Take Region III Championship
The Timberwolves won their 4th consecutive tournament to punctuate their Region III dominance at the Region III Championship at Timber Banks Golf Club, hosted by Onondaga Community College. In a change of format this was a two day event rather than a single day tournament and serves as a qualifying event for the NJCAA National Tournament, with the top two teams advancing as well as the top 10 individuals.
Ben Hersey carried the team on day one, leading all golfers with a 78. Connor Marvin scored an 83, followed by Ryan Bussing and Kyle Wilson with 86 and 87 respectively. Garrett Stevens came into the club house with a 91. The 334 total gave Coach Carpenter's squad a nice 9 stroke lead over Niagara and a comfortable 23 stroke pad over 3rd place teams Onondaga and Hudson Valley.
Day two was a true test of mettle as the weather turned ugly and there were several rain and thunder delays as the round began. Many of the golfers had to return to the club house during the delays after teeing off and in the process of playing a hole. Even after the round got fully under way the weather was a major factor as it rained for much of the round. The distractions and unfavorable conditions could have had a negative impact on performances, but the team fought through and recorded an even better overall score than day one with a 333.
Connor Marvin made up most of the difference as he improved by 3 strokes to post an 80, edging out Hersey who tallied an 81. Ryan Bussing repeated his day one score of 86 and Kyle Wilson improved by one stroke to 86. Stevens posted a 92, just one shot off his day one score despite the conditions.
The green and gold took 1st place and an automatic invite to the NJCAA National Tournament in Chautauqua, New York in June. The host Onondaga jumped Niagara to take 2nd place and the other automatic invite.
Coach Carpenter was named Coach of the Year following the event, a much deserved honor after leading his team to the Region Championship, an NJCAA Tournament berth and producing 4 All-Region Honorees.
The top 15 finishers received All-Region Honors and that included Ben Hersey, Connor Marvin, Ryan Bussing and Kyle Wilson.
