Day Three NJCAA Golf National Championship Tournament
For the third consecutive day the Timberwolves improved their scores and advanced their standing at the NJCAA Golf National Championship Tournament. They shot a team 335 on day one and beat that by one stroke on day two with a 334. The squad must have learned something from those first couple of days because they took a big step forward on day three with a team 326.
Ben Hersey was the story of the day as he went low and shot a 77, an 9 stroke improvement from his day two score and 3 strokes under his day one score. He predictably bounced back from an off round on day two to lead his team into sole possession of 7th place and make up ground on a couple of the teams ahead of them going into the final day. Hersey is currently 26th, just 4 strokes outside of the current All American cutoff.
Ryan Bussing bested his day one and day two scores of 82 by 2 strokes to come in with an 80. He has been playing his best golf of the year on the largest stage and is only 1 stroke off of the team's 3 day high score, held by Hersey, going into day four. His improvement was due, in no small part, to collecting an elusive eagle. He is the only Timberwolf to score an eagle this tournament, but it is no surprise as he has been out powering the course for three days and putting himself in great position to go low on long holes consistently.
Connor Marvin battled through a lot of tough luck lip outs to record an 83, 4 strokes off of his day two score. Marvin is a bounce back candidate for the final day and will be looking to get back into the 70's.
Garrett Stevens put up his best score of the tournament with an 86 and jumped into the top 4 for the first time with a counting score. He has improved each of his three rounds and is showing no signs of slowing down going into the final day.
Kyle Wilson struggled with fatigue and control as he scored a 96. As a freshman golfer this is his first foray into 4 day tournament play and he hit a wall, but his talent and attitude make him a strong bounce back candidate as he pushes through and finishes strong on the final day of tournament play.
Coach Carpenter's crew broke a tie with Massasoit to take over sole possession of 7th place and go into the final day trailing Bucks County by just 10 strokes for 6th place.
