Timberwolves Finish 7th In Nation
The Timberwolves completed their 4 round NJCAA National Championship Tournament with a 7th place finish after a very strong showing.
Coach Carpenter's squad used every bit of their golf talent to propel the program to national relevance over the course of the week, as all 5 golfers recorded a counting score and the three headed monster of Connor Marvin, Ben Hersey and Ryan Bussing jockeyed for position in the top 3 throughout the week, with the final order landing on Marvin, Hersey, Bussing.
Marvin ended his 4 day tournament with a score of 322. His 77 final day score was his low for the week, 2 shots under his second day score of 79. He shot 83 on both the first and third rounds. He used consistency to put up a 28th place finish as he recorded pars on 42 of his 72 holes played, trailing the leader in that category, Dan Lapp, by just 3 pars.
Hersey was only 1 shot behind Marvin with a final 4 day score of 323. His low score was day three, when he tied Marvin for the team low at 77. He shot 80's on day one and day four and had his high round on day two with an 86. His 4 day score is good for 31st overall.
Bussing improved steadily throughout the season and had his best rounds of the year on the bright stage of the NJCAA National Championship Tournament. His 4 day score of 328 is good for 39th overall. After being in the bottom half of the team's scorers for much of the season, he rose to the occasion and was Coach Carpenter's number two scorer on day one, day two and day three. His low was an 80 in round 3 and he shot 82's on day one and two before finishing up with an 84 on day four. The bright spot for Bussing was a round 3 eagle, the team's only eagle for the tournament.
Garrett Stevens battled nerves and emotions to record a 357 after his four rounds. His fist pumps and energy permeated the tournament and there were plenty of opportunities for those iconic mannerisms during his third round 86 and second round 88. He shot a 92 on day one and finished his emotional round four with a 91. His finsl score is good for 71st overall.
Kyle Wilson finished 73rd overall with a final score of 359. Wilson played much better than his final score would indicate as he hit the freshman wall on day three and struggled through a 96 round. He bounced back with vigor on day 4, however with his low score for the tournament, an 86. That showed a lot of grit and mettle, which fits in with the overall mentality of this team. He shot a day one 90 and day two 87 in summation.
Director of Athletics, Jonathan Sisk had this to say about the golf program:
"This was the golf program's first top ten finish in program history, following their first Region III Championship. Coach Carpenter did a tremendous job with this group of guys and I'm thrilled to see their hard work be rewarded with well deserved accolades. This group has battled all year through personal adversity, horrendous weather and other obstacles and have cleared every hurdle with grit, determination and mettle. Everyone on this team played a part in this historic season, from the scoring leaders, Connor and Ben, to the guys who stepped up in huge moments like Ryan. Garrett and Kyle brought a ton of talent, but almost more importantly they brought a ton of character and personality to the team. Owen excelled in the class room collecting several awards, while stepping up in several tournaments and the unsung heroes of Brett, Brendan and Evan were paramount to the successes of the team as they pushed their teammates to be better each week. I couldn't be any more proud of these guys!"
