Timberwolves Down 3rd Ranked Northampton to Open Season
Coach Job has been itching to get on a field all winter and he and the Timberwolves finally got the chance to get on the turf as they traveled to Myrtle Beach to get their season started up. Many of the nation's top teams travel to South Carolina to get away from the cold and snowy weather of the Northeast and one of those teams was 3rd ranked Northampton.
The Timberwolves threw their top pitcher, Zach Vavasour, to challenge the top ranked squad and he did not disappoint as he cruised through the Spartan lineup. He gave up a walk and hit a batter in the 2nd, but got out of unscathed. A single in the third and a single and walk in the fourth wouldn't hurt him and then his offense woke up.
In the fifth inning a leadoff walk by Jordan Prehoda led to a big inning. Ramon Acosta bunted him over and Jared Winkle singled him home to break the 0-0 tie. Aaron Cook, who had already doubled earlier, singled in a run and Erik Wettersten doubled to make the score 3-0. John Stewart kept the party going with an RBI single of his own to cap the inning with a fourth run.
Vavasour kept the 0's coming as he blanked the Spartans through 6 before being pulled for Joe Micare. Micare struggled with his command, but got the job done as he closed out the 7th inning without giving up a run to preserve the shutout.
The Timberwolves next play Bergen in the second game of their double header.
