Marsh Perfect In Win Over Twins
Coach Job turned to Ben Marsh in the second game of the double header against Columbia-Greene and the big lefty turned out to be the perfect choice, quite literally. Marsh mowed through the lineup like a finely tuned lawn mower through immaculately kempt big league grass. He left no blemishes. He had no rough patches. In his wake was only a very clean, very balanced and very perfect box score that showed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 hit batters, 0 base runners. It almost seems blasphemous to ruin the streak of zeroes by mentioning that he struck out 7, but it must be done. He was untouchable for much of the game and the strikeouts prove that out.
When asked about his historic pitching performance he had this to say:
"As a pitcher it's key to have those runs up on the board from the first inning and we did just that. We put the bat to the ball and that gave me great momentum heading into the start. After the first few innings went by I felt like I could throw any pitch where I wanted. Matt Zita called an amazing game behind the dish and helped me roll through it smoothly. It honestly felt like the whole game flew by in 30 seconds and then all of a sudden there I was letting go of that last pitch to secure the perfect game."
That offense he mentioned was spectacular in support of Marsh. They put up 12 runs spear headed by a 2 run 1st inning on a ball crushed by Ramon Acosta for a 2 run double. Jared Winkle led off the 2nd inning with a triple that led to the 3rd run of the contest and Jordan Prehoda launched a ball into orbit to lead off the 3rd, followed by a Brent McGhee RBI double and Aaron Cook RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0. They scored 2 more in the 4th inning and blew it open in the 5th inning behind Matt Zita and Jordan Prehoda doubles to reach the mercy rule at 12-0.
Then of course Marsh came out carrying history in his left hand and wrote his name into the record books by striking out the first batter, inducing a lazy fly ball to center for the second out and a weak grounder to second to finish up the perfect game.
"It was awesome," said Coach Job of the pitching performance, "we saw something special out there."
The Timberwolves next play Columbia-Greene at home in their home opener on Thursday April 12th at East Field.
