Timberwolves Scare #5 Onondaga
The Timberwolves gave the fifth ranked Lazers everything they could handle, but fell short in the upset bid.
The Timberwolves traveled to Syracuse to take on the fifth ranked Onondaga Lazers and nearly pulled off the upset. The green and gold led at the half 43 to 39 behind the outstanding play of Elijah Davis who came off the bench and made an immediate impact with all of his 11 points coming in the first half. The Lazers went on a run to begin the second half and overcame the 6 point deficit with excellent shooting from deep and built up a 5 point lead early in the half. Their lead reached 11, which would be their largest lead, before Mike Tillman drilled a 3 and slashed the lane for a lay in to bring it back to a two possession game. Tillman was outstanding all game as he ended with a team leading 19 points on 7 for 10 shooting from the field. The score stayed within one possession for much of the final 10 minutes, but Onondaga extended the lead to 6 under 1:30 to force Coach Haskell to use hurry up offense and fouls at the end of the game, which led to the 9 point victory for Onondaga, but this game could have gone either way.
Demani Smith continued his aggressive post play and nabbed another double, double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but was hounded by foul trouble all night. Shea Irish netted 11 points including a big three ball to bring the game to within 2 late in the second half.
The Timberwolves next play at home after the break against Word of Life on January 17th.
