Timberwolves Win Dog Fight With Red Barons
The Timberwolves defeated the Red Barons of Corning 63-50 behind dominant second half.
The Corning Red Barons visited SUNY Adirondack on a day that saw plenty of action. The Coaches Versus Cancer Basketball Shootout was being held on the campus of SUNY Adirondack and the game was the third of the day and sixth of the weekend with local high school teams playing on Ben Davis Court with proceeds going to Coaches Versus Cancer to fund research and resources toward defeating cancer, one of America's leading causes of death and hospitalization.
Corning came out strong taking an early lead and carrying a 14 to 10 lead into the second quarter and extending it to 34 to 26 at the half. The half time talk from Coach Quattrocchi must have been one for the ages because the Timberwolves dominated the final frames on the defensive side of the ball. They only allowed Corning 8 points in the third quarter and another 8 points in the final quarter to cruise to a 63 to 50 victory over the visiting Red Barons.
Much of the damage was done by sophomore Brianna McKinney who led all scorers with 17 on 7 for 15 from the floor. She changed her style up and caught the Red Barons by surprise as she scored all but 3 of her points inside the arc. Ashley Caba added 14 points, but changed the game with her passing abilities as she found teammates for buckets 8 times to lead the team in assists. Freshman guard Alexis Smith eclipsed double figures with 10 points and cleared the boards all night to the tune of 7 rebounds. Kaicey Sardina led the team in rebounding with 10, followed closely by Kylee Brand who had 9 boards and 9 points to just miss a double double.
Kate Bourdeau returned from a leg injury sustained while participating with the Timberwolves Soccer team to pick up 2 rebounds.
The Timberwolves next play tomorrow against Finger Lakes at home. Game time is set for noon.
