Sophomores Dominate on Sophomore Night
The Lady Timberwolves donned the pink uniforms on Sophomore Night and showcased their volleyball skills as they defeated Paul Smith's in straight sets.
The first set got out of hand early as the home team jumped out to a commanding lead and never looked back, winning 25 to 7.
The second set was a little more dicey as Coach Li had to call a timeout with the Bobcats making a run at having their first lead of the contest, trailing 10 to 9. The timeout was very effective as his team focused up and went on to pick up the second set 25 to 11 and kept rolling through the final set 25 to 7.
Breanna MacDuff assisted on 24 kills, many of which came from the strong right hand of Jana Depalo. Depalo led the team in kills and points with 14 kills and 2 service aces, including the match winner. Sophomore Victoria Bruni dug 17 balls and Leah Bowen had an outstanding match from the service line as she served 10 aces. Karley Hertzner added 8 kills and 2 blocks.
The day included a volleyball match, but it was really all about celebrating the sophomores. Coach Li and the coaching staff bought each of the 4 sophomores gift bags and flowers and had the parents involved in the pre-match festivities.
Breanna MacDuff is a second year sophomore setter out of Hudson Falls. She was a multiple sport star at the local high school, but decided to focus on volleyball after being recruited by Coach Li, which was a great decision as she is among the national leaders in assists and assists per set. She is a Physical Education major who will be looking to transfer and continue her volleyball career at the 4 year level.
Victoria Bruni is a second year sophomore outside hitter out of Shaker High in Latham, New York. She was named Most Improved Player in 2017 and has continued to improve throughout the off season and 2018 to become one of the best all around players on the team. She has consistently put up outstanding numbers, both on the offensive side of the ball and defensive side of the ball this season as she has put up double digit kills and digs in the same match 3 times. Bruni is a Marketing, Management and Entrepreneurship Major at SUNY Adirondack.
Faith Spangler is a freshman on the court, but sophomore academically as she is an outstanding student as well as athlete. Spangler is a middle hitter out of Delaware Academy in Bovina Center, New York. She has been a leader for the volleyball program this year and represents the team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is a Music Major who has made the Dean's List twice and President's List once while being a straight A student during her tenure at SUNY Adirondack. She plans to transfer to a 4 year university and continue pursuing a career in the music industry.
Leah Bowen is a transfer sophomore from Word of Life. She has been a tremendous addition to the team this year, serving as the libero and leading the team in digs. Before attending Word of Life she was a star for Hartford Central High in Hartford, New York. Bowen is majoring in Health Education at SUNY Adirondack.
Thank you to our sophomores for your dedication and passion for SUNY Adirondack, Adirondack Athletics and Adirondack Volleyball!
